Inlay and Onlay Restorations

This term generally refers to a restoration of part of the tooth crown that, unlike a conventional filling, is fabricated outside the mouth.

Types of restorations: inlays and onlays are used to reconstruct part of the tooth crown. Inlays, onlays and overlays are classified as fixed indirect restorations.

These are ceramic restorations used to reconstruct extensive defects in posterior teeth. They represent a natural transition between treatment with a conventional filling and restoration with a dental crown. They are a suitable alternative to extensive composite fillings and a particularly suitable alternative to extensive amalgam build-ups. Good oral hygiene and the patient’s cooperation are essential. Preparing a tooth for an inlay or onlay requires significantly less removal of healthy tooth tissue than preparation for a crown, making this treatment more conservative.
