Toothpaste

Toothpaste is an integral part of daily dental care and an important complement to proper oral hygiene. It helps with the mechanical removal of dental plaque, which is the main cause of tooth decay and gum disease.

It is important to remember that dental plaque cannot be removed simply by rinsing the mouth or using a stream of water. Plaque adheres firmly to the surface of the teeth and dental restorations and can only be removed mechanically – with a toothbrush used in combination with toothpaste.

What Is Toothpaste Used For?

Toothpaste has several important functions:

  • facilitates the mechanical removal of dental plaque

  • acts as a carrier for active ingredients that support the health of the teeth and gums

  • helps increase the resistance of tooth enamel

  • reduces the formation of dental plaque

  • may have anti-inflammatory effects on the gums

Fluoride in Toothpaste

Fluoride contained in toothpaste plays an important role in preventing tooth decay. Fluoride has a cariostatic (anti-caries) effect – it helps strengthen tooth enamel, supports its remineralisation and inhibits the growth of bacteria in the oral cavity.

With regular daily use, fluoride toothpaste can reduce the risk of tooth decay by approximately 20%.

When choosing a toothpaste, it is therefore advisable to check its fluoride content.

Recommended fluoride concentrations in toothpaste:

  • children up to 8 years: approximately 250–400 ppm fluoride

  • children from 9 years and adults: approximately 1000–1500 ppm fluoride

  • adults with an increased risk of tooth decay: 1800–2500 ppm fluoride (usually only for a limited period and on the recommendation of a dental professional)

Specialised Toothpastes

There are also toothpastes with anti-inflammatory effects that may help in the treatment of gum inflammation or periodontitis. The choice of these toothpastes should be discussed with a dentist or dental hygienist, who can recommend a product suited to the patient’s individual needs.
